Christmas is all about memories, but if we’re really honest they aren’t all necessarily happy ones. Life can get complicated and challenging sometimes.
The best gift I have ever received was from my girlfriend, Jeanne, in 2007. It was our first Christmas together and I was in the middle of a nasty divorce. It was a tough Christmas, to say the least. I was trying to move forward, but it was complicated.
Jeanne talked to my family and put together a collection of pictures and gave it to me as a scrapbook of memories. She gathered up pictures from when I was a child, when my children were tiny, random photos full of memories and newer photos of Jeanne and me. It was awesome to see, assembled in one place, a reminder of all that is good and special in my life. If my memory serves me correct, that might be the only time I cried with joy because of something someone had done for ME. I felt so loved and so lucky that she came into my life. I am now blessed to call her my wife.
You know that saying, “Today is the first day of the rest of your life?” Well, that was the first Christmas of the rest of my life. I could not imagine the holidays without my loving wife and four beautiful children. Every year I look forward to making new memories. To me that is what this holiday is about – making memories with the ones you love and enjoying time with those that you keep close to your heart.
