My New Job Has Given Me Confidence and Stability – I Am My Daughter’s Hero Again

It’s human nature to make assumptions or jump to conclusions about people. But you should never judge a book by its cover. You never really know what people are going through in their lives.

Take Terrance Stevens, for example. He was a successful professional with more than 10 years of customer service, sales and tech support experience under his belt.

Suddenly, his entire life went astray – in a BIG way.

“I found myself in a bad relationship. Then things got worse… I wound up homeless. I knew I had to get my mind right, but it was a struggle.”

Luckily, Terrance was able to stay at a shelter while he tried getting back on his feet.

One day, he heard about a top temp agency in Tacoma, TERRA Staffing Group. He filled out an application and was contacted by our Tacoma office.

Terrance had experience working with temp agencies in the past, but he found working with TERRA to be quite different.

He shared, “Other agencies didn’t offer consistent work. I never had a job over a month long, but things were different with TERRA.  And TERRA actually asked me if certain jobs were okay. They didn’t just send me out, like other agencies would. I was under no obligation. How I felt actually mattered. ”

After working a couple of temp jobs to make some money, Terrance decided to let the Tacoma team know that he was interested in, and ready for, more long-term opportunities.

He sat down with Recruiter, Mandy Garcia.

Mandy shared, “I spoke to Terrance and learned a little more about his work history and his short and long-term goals. He had a great customer service background, but was only being placed in light industrial jobs. He was friendly and incredibly articulate. I could see that he was trying to get back on his feet. After reevaluating his needs, I decided to arrange an interview for him with one of my clients who was looking for a customer service specialist – and he SHINED!”

“The client told me that she loved Terrance right from the get-go. She was impressed with how quickly he picked up on things – and how easy he is to get along with,” said Mandy.

And just like that, Terrance went from homeless and doing temp work, to having full-time regular employment!

“Mandy helped me by showing a real passion for her job. She listened to me when I told her what type of work I was looking for and has always been there for support. Her replies to emails and her call-back time are incredible. She even called me back one day when she was out of the office… she didn’t just dump us and wipe her hands of the situation. She provided continuing support and showed dedication. Gandhi said, ‘be the change you want to see in the world.’ The way I see it, she leads by example,” Terrance shared.

“There was something about him that made me think, this guy just needs a chance. Glad I trusted my gut. He is great!” Mandy said.

“I had no stability. TERRA helped me. I wanted permanent work and they found it for me. Not only that, in my new job I am able to help other people find employment! I am lucky enough to be able to help others and I get to see them going to work every day. I get a lot of gratification from helping others,” Terrance stated.

He sent the following message to Mandy, not long ago:

I wanted to personally thank you for taking a chance on me. When I first came into TERRA looking for work, my life was completely different. I was struggling to get my life back in order after going through multiple hardships and getting over a toxic relationship that hurt me both, financially and mentally. I couldn’t provide for myself or my daughter and my confidence had almost been completely shattered. All I had was a set of skills I knew I could put to use but was having a hard time finding an opportunity. That’s where you and TERRA came in and saved the day for me. Fast forward nearly 6 months later and things are going great. I found the stability that I needed in life. I’m a full time student and have a great full time job, bought a car, saving up for a new home and I’m back to being my daughter’s superhero. I appreciate all you’ve done.

Terrance wants his story to serve as an inspiration to anyone going through a difficult time in their life.

And he had this advice:

“People sometimes run from their problems or give up. They don’t, or won’t, take on challenges. But they need to try. It’s like my pop used to say, ‘if you don’t ask the answer will always be no.’ It’s the same with trying. If you don’t try, the answer is always no. So – no matter what what’s going on in your life – apply yourself. Believe in yourself. And you can have the world! I may not have the world yet, but I have stability now, and am that much closer. “
