From Washington to Colorado—I Could Count on TERRA

Moving to a totally new area can be overwhelming, especially if you have to search for a new job.  

But Alonzo Curtis was more than happy to move long-distance if it meant being with his family. And he knew he had resources to help him find employment. 

We’ll let Alonzo share his story. 

My wife and I moved from Colorado to Washington state. My oldest lives in Everett and she was having her first kid, so we picked up everything to be with her and our grandkid.

I started looking for work when we arrived and for the first 2 weeks, I couldn’t find anything. Then I noticed TERRA’s Everett branch, which happened to be right around the corner from our new home.

I called, went into the office and filled out an application. Before the end of the week, I was working!

I didn’t know anyone except for my daughter and son-in-law, so TERRA quickly filled that void. Not only did I have a job; I was meeting new people.

That temp job kept me going until I landed a permanent role, also through TERRA, as a Forklift Operator for a logistics company.

I worked there for many years. But after my 3rd grandchild was born, my wife grew tired of babysitting. And my youngest daughter, who was back in Colorado, was going through some trouble. My wife and I prayed about it and decided to move back.

So, I reached back out to the Everett office and asked, if by any chance they had a location in Colorado to help me find a job—they do! That just completely blew my mind.

Before we moved, I talked to Marci in Aurora who set things up for me so that when I arrived, I had a job.

I started out in a temporary role until I found something more permanent; a Stockroom Clerk at a manufacturing company. It was the perfect job for me!

After my first day, my supervisors said, ‘We’re interested in you and we’ll put you in a different department if this isn’t the right fit,’ And I said, ‘No, I like this!’ I know how to use the scanner, how to pull the orders. It’s basic stuff that I’ve been doing for years.

This job turned out to be such a blessing.

I’m at a point in my life where I’m starting to think about semi-retiring in a few years and working part-time, and this job will allow me to do that. My wife also just had serious surgery and here I can take time off to be with her. And in my first week, we had a family emergency. Not only did they tell me to take the week off, when I got back, they bought me lunch to cheer me up. It’s a really welcoming team.

So if you’re like me, in a new place looking for a job, I do recommend going to TERRA. Give them an opportunity to be a blessing to you.
