TERRA Found Me a Job That Allows Me to Utilize My Skills

Most people want a job where they can utilize their skills. Jacob Grossman was no different.

After completing a welding program at Portland Community College, he was eager to pursue a career in his field of study.

As so often happens, he wound up in a job he wasn’t very excited about.

He’d accepted a job with a demolition company repairing parts of dump trucks. While he was able to utilize his skills, it wasn’t ideal.

You see, most of the repairs Jacob would make were underneath the trucks. Working under the heavy machinery was starting to make him nervous.

“It really got into my head that the job just wasn’t safe,” he shared.

He believed it was only a matter of time before he got injured on the job. It was time to start looking for something new.

Jacob decided to reach out to TERRA Staffing’s Beaverton branch. He’d partnered with them a few years back and had a good experience.

Previously, the Beaverton team had placed Jacob on a welding project, and things went great! He was even offered a long-term position with the company. Unfortunately, he wasn’t able to accept the job because he was still in school.

He was hoping to find another opportunity for the same company.

Jacob met with Recuriter Haley Rott.

“It was clear to me that Jacob was that type of employee that employers could rely on,” Haley said. “He has a strong work ethic and is dedicated to his craft.”

While Haley would have loved to tell him about a job, she didn’t have any welding openings at the time. But she kept his name at the top of her list and promised to call him once a position became available.

It didn’t take long.

Within about a week, Haley received a call from a client who was in need of a welder – and she knew just who to reach out to.

“Not only did Jacob demonstrate the technical skills required for this role, but his personality perfectly matched the culture of the company,” Haley said.

She also knew that the work itself would make Jacob happy. It was indoor work building exhaust systems for semiconductors.

“The more I heard about the job, the more it sounded like the right fit,” Jacob shared.

He added, “And I was so excited it wouldn’t be working outdoors!”

Not long after, Jacob started his new position.

And there’s great news! After working a few months as a temporary employee, he was recently hired on by the company!

“I love it,” he said. “I’m excited about the work I do, that I get to utilize my skills, and the people I work with are great!”

His supervisors are happy as well.

“They always describe him as a rock-star,” Haley said. “They even said that Jacob is a perfect fit for the company.”

We asked Jacob if he would recommend TERRA to someone looking for work: “Of course! They seem to put people in great jobs. I was given two really good jobs both times I’ve worked with TERRA.”

He also has some advice for fellow job seekers who are interested in turning a temp job into something long-term.

“If you want an employer to hire you, you have to make yourself useful. Show your value to the company.”
