TERRA Helped Me Find A Job in Six Days

When Ruben Fair moved from San Diego to Denver to be closer to family, and began looking for work, he kept an open mind.

He didn’t mind starting “from the bottom” and working his way up.

But when you learn about his background and work ethic, it makes total sense why.

We’ll let Ruben share his story

I prefer doing things by the book and working in a structured environment. Following protocol comes naturally to me. And that comes from my military background.

I’ve been in the Navy for thirteen years. There is a cohesion and family aspect to the Navy that speaks to me. Everything is a process and has a system and a way to be done correctly.

While I was enlisted, it was my job to train people who ranked below me so that they could—someday—take over my position. I was accountable for their success. And so I wanted to train them to be a better leader than me. That experience taught me how to work with people and understand that everyone operates differently.

Fast forward to my first week in Denver. Though I had been a Warehouse Supervisor in San Diego, I was okay with starting closer to entry-level— especially being new to the area and jobless.

I hit the ground running and started looking for jobs online. I applied to a Warehouse Associate role in Lakewood, through TERRA, and received a call the same day.

I spoke to a recruiter, Angelina Cruz, who in just a few days, set me up with an interview at an electrical supplies distributor.

It was a quick interview with the manager. He broke down the job into very simple terms and laid out what his expectations were.

He gave it to me straight and said he could tell by my resume that I have the ability to work hard. And that if there was something I didn’t know how to do, we could work on it together. He made it clear that he was willing to train.

Other employers wanted me to learn quickly with little help. But at this company, the manager was like, I see your potential and I know what you’re capable of doing. That stood out to me.

Then he told me, I don’t need to know anything else. You’re the guy for the job.

I was surprised at how quickly he wanted to hire me. But I was excited, too! I happily accepted the job offer on the spot.

Now, I’ve been at my new job for about a month. I find the work really interesting. There’s always something new to learn.

And my coworkers are great. They’re well-versed in solar panels and how panels help economically. It’s impressive. They’ve already taught me how to ship and receive, too, which is something I wasn’t super familiar with initially.

Now, I’m an expert. I can easily teach someone how to do my job. Those are the things that are important to me.

And if I want to move up in this company, I know I have a foot in the door.
