TERRA Helped Me Step Out of My Comfort Zone and Into a New Career

Torique Bond had recently started a career as an outbound clerk when COVID-19 hit and he was laid-off from his job. 

Needless to say, Torique was disappointed. All he wanted was to work for a company he could grow with. And now, he had to start all over.

For months, he searched for a stable, career-building position. 

But while he kept finding jobs that paid the bills, they weren’t ones in which he could thrive.

He explained, “I bounced around for a while. I tried working from home but it got old really fast. While I enjoyed the work itself, I hated the remote aspect. I wanted to get back out and be physically active. 

“Then I found seasonal employment that was more physical but it didn’t pay that well, and it wasn’t challenging at all.” 

Still, Torique needed to support his family, so he stayed committed to his short-term job as long as it lasted. 

But, as the season came to an end, he had to make a decision — and fast.

He could wait to see if this temporary role turned into a permanent one, or he could take a risk and look for another opportunity that would be a better fit. 

“I know what areas I have more strength in,” he stated. “I wanted to find something where I could use my skill set and be in it for the long-term.” 

So Torique took a chance. He made the difficult decision to pursue something new. 

An online search for job opportunities led him to TERRA’s Phoenix team. 

He connected with Staffing Specialist, Kami Sifuentes, and they spent some time talking about what he wanted in a job. 

Right away, Kami was impressed with his work history, his communication skills and his honesty. She knew she could help Torique find the right fit.

More than that, she added, “Torique had a great attitude and was friendly and professional. I loved his passion for what he hoped his next opportunity would be!” 

Kami understood Torique’s hope to find a lasting match. And it just so happened she had one. 

She told him about a warehouse material handler position for a mattress manufacturing company. While it wasn’t work he was familiar with, Torique was willing to give it a try. 

“Since it was a new industry and a new role for me, I didn’t know what it was going to be like. I was curious, but a little apprehensive,” he confessed. 

Ultimately, there was no need for Torique to worry! He immediately made a great impression on his interviewers and, in no time, they offered him the job. 

Kami shared, “They love how dedicated and hardworking he is. They are so happy to have him on their team!”

As a matter of fact, Torique has already been promoted! Seems like he has found his perfect match and is already paving the way to a great career!

“I was just promoted to a lead position. It comes with more pay. I haven’t made this much money in quite a while! As a lead, my company treats me as a supervisor. My input is valued and I can make a lot more decisions.

“And I like the fact that I can use my brain in this job. When there are problems, I can help figure out how to solve them. I can use my thoughts and put them into action.”

Here’s Torique’s advice to people who might be struggling to find the right fit: 

“Be open-minded. Especially if you are interested in change. Most of us are now in a situation where we have to get out of our comfort zone. You might learn something completely new and make a career out of it.”
