Temping Was a Learning Experience And Led Me to a Great New Career

Dion Armstrong started learning industrial skills in his early years, working as a janitor.

While he liked his job, he knew it wasn’t what he wanted forever.

So, for the next ten years, Dion accepted countless short-term roles, hoping to gain experience in different fields.

But it was also important for him to earn a steady income, which is why he wasn’t afraid of temp work.

“As a single father, I was willing to do whatever it took to provide for my son,” he said.

Dion was continuously learning new skills from the various temp roles. This was exactly what he wanted.

In his mind, the more he learned, the more marketable he would be when looking for a long-term career.

Finally, Dion knew he was ready for something more. He felt competent enough to start looking for a job he could call home.

“I wanted a light industrial position where I could work with my hands and stay busy. I really wanted a long-term role, but was still willing to take temp work for the experience,” Dion said.

He did an online search and discovered TERRA.

He applied on their website and received a call back from Seattle Recruiter Ellie Tsuji. Impressed by his resume, she arranged an interview for Dion the following day in the Seattle office.

“My first impression of Dion was that he was a very driven candidate. When discussing his previous experience, he would tell me what he had accomplished with great passion. He had a very positive attitude and seemed very team-oriented, which made him perfect for my client.”

Ellie was working on filling a production laborer role and felt that Dion certainly had the capability to do the job.

She told him about the production opportunity, right there in the interview. Because of his previous experience, Dion felt confident he would be a great fit.

Ellie organized an interview for Dion with the client.

Not only did Dion have the experience the client was looking for, but they loved that he had a lot of pride for the work he’s done. They knew they wanted him on their team right away.

Ellie called Dion to share the great news and offer him the position.

“I couldn’t believe what I was hearing,” Dion began. “I couldn’t help jumping up and down and down – that’s how elated I was. I’d gone to TERRA looking for new opportunities and was being offered an immediate opportunity that fit my schedule. I was so grateful.”

His supervisor was equally as thrilled to have Dion as part of the team, saying, “I really like Dion. He is a great employee and one of the smartest guys I have ever met. He comes in on time and ready to go! I respect and appreciate all of his hard work.”

We asked Dion what he thought made him a such a great employee. He said, “I’m self-motivated and I take my work seriously – even when it’s temporary. I work well as part of a team and take criticism well.”

He added, “I’m happy to work in a such a great environment. There’s great communication and everyone works well together and does their part.”
