I Left a Long-Term Career to Try Something New—And I’m Glad I Did

Photo of Bruce AllenBruce Allen had an impressive 15-year career as as a shred technician and customer service representative.

But when his wife received a lucrative relocation job offer, they knew they couldn’t turn it down. So, they made the decision to move to Washington from California.

Though he was saying goodbye to a long-term career, Bruce saw this as an opportunity to try something new. He felt as though he had reached a plateau in his previous position.

The timing of the move was, in fact, perfect for him.

“I was eager to take my skill set and grow with the next role. Ideally, I was looking for a company that would give me the stability I had prior to moving to Washington, growth and a chance to sharpen my tools,” Bruce said.

He searched for jobs online and went to TERRA Staffing’s Everett branch and interviewed with Recruiter Jessica Rahe.

Bruce shared that he was looking for a position in a warehouse or material handling. He let her know that he was even open to temporary work. Anything really that would allow him to try something new.

Jessica was working with a brand-new client that had, that day, given her a position to recruit for: an inventory clerk role.

The client was looking for someone who was a good culture fit, had previous longevity and was trainable. Being that Bruce had 15 years of customer service and inside sales experience, Jessica felt he was an obvious great fit.

“I walked right out of the interview room and called my client immediately,” she began. “I knew if I didn’t get Bruce an interview fast, he probably wouldn’t be available for work the next day. He was that impressive of a candidate. After sharing his resume with the hiring manager over the phone, we scheduled an interview for Bruce right away.”

His interview with the client went so well that Jessica had an offer for him the same day!

Bruce really enjoys all aspects of his new position.

“I like that I have a variety of tasks to work on and that I get to be in a relaxed atmosphere with fun, hardworking people,” he said.

His supervisor shared, “We love having Bruce as part of our team. He is a great leader with an infectiously positive attitude.”

We’re thrilled to tell you  that Bruce has made such an impact on the company that other departments within that company are now reaching out to TERRA to fill additional roles!

We asked him if he had advice for people searching for new job opportunities.

“Be open to different possibilities. You may be accustomed to doing one thing your whole life, but you may also be really good at doing something you never thought of!”

You have great perspective, Bruce! Thank you for all of your hard work, and for letting us be part of your story. We wish you continued success!
