“What do you want to be when you grow up?”
Ken Church never had to think about his answer. He always knew he wanted to be a chef.
He loved cooking, and couldn’t imagine himself doing anything else. So, at the age of 19, he started working in kitchens to make his dream happen.
Ken trained under some of the best in the Pacific Northwest, always giving his all. But as a sous chef, he never received any recognition for the hard work he did. And he needed more hours on top of that.
Sadly, it was time for Ken to face the facts and look for another job.
Ken thought about what other types of work he might enjoy doing. Since he liked working with his hands, he thought warehouse work could be a good fit.
He took to the internet and did a search for warehouse positions. That’s when he saw an ad for TERRA Staffing Group.
Eager to start working again, he called his local TERRA Tacoma office and arranged an interview for the next day.
Ken went into the interview with a completely open mind, willing to take temporary roles. He looked at temp work as a great opportunity to earn a paycheck and learn new skills. He believed that if he worked hard to prove himself, he could move up in a company.
Ken interviewed with Chantel Monson, Recruiting Coordinator. She was working on filling a temp-to-hire, assembly position at a leading aerospace manufacturer.
“Ken had been working as a sous chef for the past couple of years and just wasn’t getting the hours he needed. He seemed eager to work and projected a very ‘can do’ attitude. I immediately felt he’d be a great fit for my position,” Chantel shared.
She told Ken about the position, informing him that it was close to his house and had great pay.
Ken felt like Chantel took the time to get to know him, and he had a good feeling about the job, so he accepted the position.
And he couldn’t be more ecstatic.
“I always stay busy and learn and grow every day. I don’t even feel like I’m at work most days!” Ken said.
The client is equally as pleased.
Ken’s supervisor said, “From day one, we knew that there was something different about Ken. He is cooperative, has a really great attitude, and is always doing extra things to help and stay busy. We have big plans for his growth within our organization.”
When we asked Ken what advice he had for people switching careers, he said:
“Think about where you are, then think about where you want to be. When you’re taking the necessary steps to get there, remind yourself of how bad you want it. No matter what, always be positive and do your best. Everything happens for a reason.”
And we have some exciting news to share. Ken has been converted to a regular, full-time employee after just 30 days of work – which is very atypical for this employer!
Congratulations, Ken! We can’t wait to watch you grow in your new role and with your company!
