4 Things Successful Leaders Never Forget

leadersGreat managers know their success isn’t merely about keeping the details straight.

It’s also about providing a clear vision that inspires the team to success. It’s about leadership.

To inspire others, it helps to be inspired yourself.

Want to keep your leadership vision front and center?

Here are 4 quotes from great leaders:

1. “If your actions inspire others to dream more, learn more, do more and become more, you are a leader.” – John Quincy Adams

Today’s corporate buzzwords translate this quote into terms like “engagement,” “motivation,” and “productivity.” But the fifth U.S. president’s simple phrasing puts it best.

To keep your eye on inspiration, first ask yourself what led your superiors to promote you to leadership. Where did they see you dreaming, learning, doing or becoming more than you were before?  The examples you recall will help you see where your best abilities to inspire lie.

2. “Success is peace of mind which is a direct result of self-satisfaction in knowing you did your best to become the best you are capable of becoming.” – John Wooden

Legendary coach John Wooden changed the nature of basketball when he redefined success solely in terms his own players could control.

Sure, winning the game – or making quota or reducing costs – is great. But when your personal sense of success depends on factors outside your control, you risk failing through no fault of your own. Great leaders internalize success, set high standards for themselves and encourage their teams to do so as well.

3. “Don’t find fault, find a remedy.” – Henry Ford

Perhaps the best way to identify a leader is to see who steps forward to solve a problem.

As a manager, your team looks to you when problems happen. Not only do they need a road map out of the jam, they need guidance on how to handle themselves while they fight the challenge. Even if blame can be laid elsewhere, keep your eye on the solution – and encourage your team to do the same.

4. “No man will make a great leader who wants to do it all himself, or to get all the credit for doing it.” – Andrew Carnegie

Want to see great leaders? Look at their teams.

Andrew Carnegie made a name for himself not as a steel magnate, but as a philanthropist. He understood the value of delegating tasks to people who were equipped to do them well and of sharing the fruits of that labor with others. To lead more effectively, delegate twice: Once when the work needs to be done, and again when the credit needs to be shared.
