How to Use Technology to Create a Better Candidate Experience

During the recession, candidates struggled to find the right employer. Today, with the economy in full swing, employers are struggling to find the right candidates.

Technological innovations can make it easier than ever to find, recruit, and retain the right candidates – if used wisely. Here are three of the best ways to use technology to create a better candidate experience:

  1. Applicant Tracking Systems (ATS). Applicant tracking systems, or ATS, allow companies to automate the collection of resumes, cover letters, and application materials. A cloud-based ATS allows managers to upload job postings, manage candidates, and gather relative data throughout the organization, helping companies to choose better candidates. Automated response emails let candidates know when their materials have been received and what to expect next, opening a line of communication that helps keep good candidates interested and engaged.
  2. Social Media. For finding promising talent, no site is better than LinkedIn, the only social media site that focuses solely on business connections. Over 300 million users currently have LinkedIn profiles. Regular updates on candidates’ profiles give hiring managers insight into a candidate’s work ethic, experience, recent accomplishments, professional networks, and more. Twitter also provides a simple platform for companies to reach qualified audiences with an interest in their job postings, as does Facebook. The simple “share” options on these platforms mean a job posting can be passed to many potential applicants with the click of a button.
  3. Mobile Apps Mobile is taking technology by storm, so companies that don’t make their efforts mobile-friendly are missing out. Apps like Indeed, StepStone, and Resume Star make it easy for candidates and companies alike to connect over job postings, share resumes and application materials in standard formats, organize applications and listings, and more. To combine the power of apps and social media, consider an app like HootSuite, which allows companies to manage multiple social media streams from a single client.
