TERRA Helped Me Find My “Blue-Collar Heaven”

A few years ago, Sean Cook re-entered the workforce and didn’t know what he wanted to do. 

But he kept a positive attitude and decided that the best way to learn whether a job was right for him, was to try it and see where the road would take him.

We’ll let Sean share his story. 

I didn’t have anything specific in mind when I started looking. I just knew I didn’t want to work in an office. 

I started looking for jobs locally on Craigslist and read “TERRA Staffing Group” at the bottom of a job posting. So I Googled TERRA and checked out the website. I could see that TERRA had a steady stream of warehouse jobs available, and I thought, Okay—I’ll try that!

It was pretty easy from there. I applied to an Order Selector position in Vancouver and someone called me within ten minutes.

And within a few weeks, I was employed! 

I worked a few different warehouse roles that ultimately weren’t right for me. 

Through those jobs, I learned what kind of work I didn’t want, and the Vancouver team had a better idea about what environment would suit me best. 

Brittany Beaulieu, Recruiter, called me to tell me about a warehouse job with a heating equipment supplier. She told me what I needed to know about this position, which was, The warehouse needs some work right now, but I know you’re going to love this role and the people that work there.

I trusted her because she had that insight. So she set me up with an interview and gave me some pointers to help me prepare, which I appreciated—because they hired me!

Brittany wasn’t kidding. They were really busy when I started. But me and my coworkers just grinded it out together and got the warehouse cleaned, organized, and the inventory corrected and ready for order-picking. 

Once things started to slow down, there were some layoffs. I was still a contractor at that time, and I knew it was important to stand out so that they could see how hard I work and what I can bring to the table.  

I just started showing up half an hour early every day and I worked as hard as I could. Not long after, my manager noticed that I was consistent and said, I want him full-time. 

Things have been great since! And my coworkers are awesome. If anyone needs help, someone always volunteers. We support each other.

In fact, when my coworker’s car broke down, we started carpooling together, which means he arrives half an hour early to work just like me. He was a contractor at the time, and I knew he wanted to stand out and make a great impression, too. I told him, Stick with me.

And now he’s a valued member of the team! 

I’m glad Brittany called me about this job. She was right! I love it here. I call it my “blue-collar heaven.”
