In this Success Story, we are pleased to shine a spotlight on an internal staff member who has been instrumental in helping TERRA grow from a two office staffing firm when she joined the company in 2000 to a highly-respected regional player in the Pacific Northwest.

As she approaches her 12 year anniversary with the company, Melissa McCoy reflects on her own success story and those she’s helped create.

Name:Melissa McCoy

Title: Recruiting Manager

How long have you been at TERRA?

Just under 12 years

Tell us a little about your background. What from your background do you think has lead to you being successful in your current role?

The biggest part of my career prior to TERRA was working at Nordstrom for nearly 7 years. I was an Account Manager for Estee Lauder and had all the Washington and Alaska stores. I traveled to the stores and ran special events and Makeup Artist Events. I also trained the Beauty Advisors and managed the Counter Managers at all the stores in partnership with Estee Lauder and Nordstrom as I was an employee of both. I started with Nordstrom when I was 22 and learned from the retail pioneers how to deliver impeccable customer service. I think learning that at a young age has really helped me developing relationships with my candidates and clients.

What’s the best part of being in the staffing industry?

I love a challenge and what keeps me excited about being in the staffing industry is that every day there is something different. There is no status quo in staffing, and just when you think you’ve seen it all, something will surprise you!

What do you enjoy most about working at TERRA?

The people, of course. Also working for a company that is a small family-owned company and also entrepreneurial. I love that TERRA is constantly evolving to keep up with whatever is happening in the market. Some of our most successful years have come during tough economic times and that speaks volumes about how the company is run and the people they have onboard.

What was your first job? What did you learn from it?

Baskin Robbins 31 Flavors. I learned that no one should ever wear a brown polyester pantsuit.EVER, and that no matter how bad of a day you are having you need to put on a big smile and leave personal problems at the door when you get to work.

Share with us a “most memorable moment”-a success story you are really proud of helping create?

One of my favorite successes during my time at TERRA has been growing a client company from our first two job orders and an average of 12 to 30 assigned employees to as many as 140 assigned employees in just two years. Part of that success included becoming their primary staffing resource (they previously used three), establishing an On-Site Coordinator and expanding into nearly a dozen different departments.

What else would you like to share?

I love working for TERRA because we are different than any other staffing company out there. We really care about the relationship on a long-term basis and strive to provide excellent customer service every step of the way.

TERRA also stands out based on our “Right Fit” philosophy and this makes us all better recruiters because we are focusing on finding the right person for the job and the right job for the person. Our clients and our candidates benefit from this and they enjoy not feeling like we are just trying to make a placement. We’re creating success stories!
