Perfect – That’s the Only Way I Can Describe My New Job

Damian Aguilera, TERRA Staffing Group Success StoryDamian Aguilera has had an impressive career. He’s managed bakeries, grocery stores, restaurants, and fast-food chains. Most recently, he worked in the jewelry business.

The jewelry store job was a big change for Damian. His passion, as you might be able to guess from his experience, is food. He’s actually been a chef for over 25 years!

“I can’t draw or paint, but when I am in the kitchen, when I am cooking, I can create with food,” he shared.

So why was he in the jewelry business for three and a half years?

“I kind of fell into it,” Damian stated. “One of my customers at the time recruited me.”

This job was better than his other job, where he’d been working 60-70-hour weeks. And despite it not being in the industry he loved, he loved the people he worked with.

Unfortunately, once his manager retired, there was a lot of restructuring and he no longer enjoyed his work environment.

He wanted a better long-term fit. Damian began looking for new employment opportunities in food production and discovered TERRA’s Scottsdale branch.

He went in and spoke to a recruiter about his job needs and expectations.

“I let them know I was looking for a food production role, in a non-retail setting. I was also looking for a specific shift. My wife works 8am-5pm and it was really important for me to find a job that lined up with her schedule.”

The Scottsdale team shared a variety of positions with Damian, but none of them felt like an ideal fit for him.

One day he received a message from Recruiter Katie Netzer. She had a job with a popular Scottsdale bakery and thought the job would be a great match for Damian.

The job was everything he wanted: food production, a Monday-Friday schedule working 7am-3pm.  He was very interested in an interview. But because Damian was working, the interview times didn’t fit in with his schedule.

That didn’t stop Katie.

“She was great. She worked hard to get me an interview,” he said. “The hiring manager wanted to make a decision by Friday, but she managed to arrange an interview for me for that day, which was my day off.”

The interview went amazingly. Damian felt an instant connection with the hiring manager.

He said, “It was apparent to me in speaking to the owner that, to her, the employees matter. And finding an employer that really cares about their employees is rare. I knew right then and there that this was where I wanted to be.”

The fact that it was seasonal work didn’t deter Damian.

“I knew it could lead to something. All I needed was a chance to prove what I can do,” he shared.

Prove himself he did.

Damian’s drive, innovative ideas, knowledge, and passion for the work made him indispensable to the employer. He recently received the offer to become a full-time, regular employee of the bakery and couldn’t be happier!

“The company culture is great! There’s a sense of ‘we’re all in this together.’

“My schedule allows me to see my wife in the morning before she goes to work and I am home when she gets home. That hasn’t happened in 20-something years!

“Perfect – I know people say this word a lot and it can seem cliché but this job really is perfect for me. I couldn’t ask for a better manager, a better team, or better hours.

“The saying is true: ‘Find something you love and you’ll never work a day in your life!’”

Want to make yourself an indispensable part of the team like Damian did? Here’s his advice:

“If you’re just ‘punching the clock’ and are OK with ‘being just a body,’ you’re not going to last long. You need to work hard, be reliable, be punctual, and show that you want to learn and can learn fast.

Doing the bare minimum is not going to cut it. You need to show them what makes you special.”

Great advice, Damian!
