Seattle is the United States’ number-one metropolitan area for small business jobs, according to a recent Seattle PI article. And this top spot means top opportunities for companies seeking to recruit first-rate talent.
The Paychex/IHS Small Business Jobs Index put Seattle first by indexing locations on a number of factors relative to a base ranking set in 2004. Seattle offers 3.1 percent more small-business jobs than it did ten years ago – the strongest performer among listed metropolitan areas. Overall, the United States added 0.13 more jobs in the past year, according to the report.
Overall, small business growth has slowed in recent months, but Seattle continues to maintain its place as the number-one small-business destination in the country. Here’s how to turn that top spot into an advantage when seeking new talent:
- Celebrate – and sell your brand. Top talent, like everyone, learns about exciting news only when that news is shared. Don’t hesitate to use Seattle’s number-one small-business ranking as a reason to celebrate your company’s unique role in Seattle’s business community, and to share this information with potential candidates. Use online platforms like LinkedIn, or your company’s blog and offline platforms like conferences and job fairs, to talk about your business’s company culture and the contribution you make to Seattle – and what kind of talent you’re looking for to help you make that contribution better.
- Reach out. Sitting at the top of the small business jobs list makes Seattle, and surrounding areas, a magnet for talented people across the country who are looking for career opportunities they aren’t finding in other cities or states. Use Seattle-specific job boards, LinkedIn groups, and other resources to scout for new talent. When candidates move to our fair city, they hop online to learn more about local businesses, events, and job openings. Meet them where they’re searching to make your case early.
- Work with your recruiter. Staffing companies with a Seattle focus know the local business climate – and where to find the candidates who “fit” both your business needs and your company’s culture. Connect with your recruiter today to start looking for the people you need.
