I Wanted a New Career and TERRA Found Me a Great Fit

Amy Yasutake worked contract accounting positions for over three years.

She really wanted to like her accounting jobs, but found that they weren’t a great fit.

She knew it was time to look for something new.

Amy didn’t want to give up on financial roles entirely, however. She wanted to see if there were other positions in the same industry that might be a better fit.

“I really wanted a long-term position, but I was willing to take a few temp jobs – even if they were accounting roles – until a great fit came along,” she said.

While searching online, she discovered TERRA Staffing Group. Several of their jobs piqued her interest. She figured that with their range of job options, they would be a great place to start her job search.

Amy called TERRA’s Seattle branch and coordinated an interview for later that week.

She interviewed with Staffing Manager Patty Stoddard.

“My first impression was that Amy was very genuine, authentic and really smart. She had some really interesting accounting experience and even had a degree in accounting, but she was ideally looking for non-accounting opportunities. Because she was open to temp work, I was confident TERRA could help her find the right fit,” said Patty.

While Amy took on a temporary assignment, Patty continued to search for a great fit for Amy.

One day, Patty called one of her clients and told them about Amy’s skills. They told Patty they had a need for a temporary accountant, so she set up an interview for Amy.

During the interview, something interesting happened.

It turned out that the client had a need for some temporary project admin support – it had just become available that very day!

The HR manager thought that Amy’s previous work experience gave her the unique skill set needed for the project. So, he introduced Amy to the Engineering Director.

They hit it off! Amy was offered the temporary project admin support role and accepted.

How awesome is that?! Due to her experience and attitude, she ended up leaving the interview with a role that was an even better fit for her – and in line with what she wanted for the future.

“I had a gut feeling that this was the right job for me. I vibed well with the interviewer and I thought we could work productively together. It’s a great learning environment and I get to learn a whole new industry,” Amy said.

Although this was only a one-month project, we’re happy to announce that Amy has been converted to a full-time, regular employee!

The Engineering Director said, “Amy has been a terrific addition to the team. She is naturally collaborative and her positive, can-do response to any task requested of her led to her becoming involved in a much larger capacity. There is never a topic in project meetings where her name isn’t mentioned!”

Amy is loving her new position.

“I’m surrounded by hardworking individuals who boost each other’s strengths and build upon our weaknesses. I could be having the worst day ever and I’ll still have a smile on my face.” Amy said.

As to what makes her successful, she said, “I work really hard. I’m not a quitter. Give me the right tools and I’ll make it work.”

We asked her what advice she had for job seekers. This is what she said:

“There’s always a place out there for you. And if you need help, TERRA is a great support team. But it’s not just who you know. It’s also how well you sell yourself. Just don’t give up to the hardship of unemployment.”
