Valerie's willingness to learn helped her turn a temp job into a career!Sometimes one door closes so another one, a better one, can open.

Valerie Hansen worked for a printing company for six years doing some customer service and project management work, and was finally taking on more bookkeeping and accounting responsibilities – exactly where she wanted her career to go.

Sadly, things took an unexpected turn and she was unfortunately laid off.

“It was devastating,” Valerie said.

Valerie began searching for job opportunities. She also shared her resume online in hopes that it would help her get in front of employers faster.

Shortly after, Valerie received a call from Becky Polley, Phoenix Recruiter, who came across Valerie’s resume while doing a search for one of her clients.

After learning more about her and her skills, Becky was convinced that Valerie would be a good fit for her client’s bookkeeper role.

Becky said, “She was eager, willing to learn and excited about this opportunity. She was even taking some QuickBooks courses to build her bookkeeping skills. Though my client was looking for someone with a little more bookkeeping experience, I felt that they would love Valerie. In addition to her great attitude, she also had some experience working in the printing industry, and my client was a large printing and packaging company.”

Sure enough, Becky was right.  The client liked Valerie and felt that she would be a great asset to the team.

Though Valerie was meant to start as a temporary employee, she was brought on as a full-time, regular employee after only 3 weeks as a temp! Her desire to learn and her willingness to take on tasks made her an MVP in no time! After all, there are certain skills that can be taught, but a desire to learn is not one of them.

Valerie is happy with her new job. “I love helping people and solving problems. And I love that the work I do can help the business grow and be successful.”

She added, “You never know where you’re going to find your next big opportunity. That’s why I didn’t say no to temp work. And I would for sure recommend TERRA to someone looking for work. They offered a lot of coaching. I also appreciated how Becky would check in with me regularly. It felt more about me than the company.”

Want to be successful in your next temporary assignment? Follow Valerie’s example.

“I was very curious and asked a lot of questions. Honestly, I tried to suck the knowledge from everyone. I showed that I was interested in the work and really wanted to do a good job.”
