Being Persistent in My Job Search Led Me to a Great Opportunity

Sometimes even business owners need an additional source of income. Cat Ross is no exception.

She owns a dance studio and works there in the evenings. And while she enjoys what she does, she still needed a second job.

“The studio was never a means to pay the bills,” Cat said. “I still needed to work during the day.”

For one year, she had a part-time role in the member services department of a local gym. The job wasn’t ideal.

“It wasn’t worth the time and effort. The environment wasn’t right and, more importantly, it was cutting into the time I should be spending with my kids.”

Cat knew she had to find something else, so she started looking for a new role. One that was a better fit for her, her family and her schedule.

Unfortunately, that search lasted longer than she was anticipating.

“I was looking for work for almost a year,” Cat confessed. “It was so frustrating. I have good experience, but it felt like I couldn’t get an interview to save my life.”

She didn’t give up, however, and remained persistent in her job search, applying to jobs whenever she could.

One day a friend suggested that she check out TERRA Staffing.

“I’d never been to a staffing agency before and I really didn’t know how it all worked,” she admitted.

But she was eager to find a job, so she went to the Tacoma office and met with Recruiter Sydni Sheathelm.

Sydni walked her through the whole process. According to Cat, “She really put me at ease and I left my meeting with her so excited!”

After the interview, Sydni was also excited. “She had excellent experience and was easy to talk to. It was clear she’d be a great long-term fit for any company.”

Now, Cat could’ve gone home and waited for a recruiter to call her for job opportunities. But that wasn’t her style.

“I had an alarm set every morning, reminding me to call TERRA to see what jobs were available,” she shared.

Cat impressed the Tacoma team with her determination, her open-mindedness and her strong work ethic. You see, despite her interest in finding long-term work, she accepted a variety of temporary roles. And everywhere she worked, she created fans.

With one particular company, she left a really positive impression. She’d done such a good job providing them with administrative support that when they had a long-term position available, they contacted TERRA and asked specifically for Cat.

Since she had enjoyed her time when she was working there, she jumped at the opportunity.

“I was over the moon,” she said. “I called so many people to tell them I got a position.”

She’s still excited about it.

“I don’t have to stress about finding a job. Knowing what my schedule is going to be every day is a relief. I now have a sense of security,” she said. “Added to that, I get to work with a small team and most of them have been with the company for 25+ years. It’s nice to be at a company people enjoy working for.”

Her supervisors are happy with her as well

Sydni said, “The company shared with me that Cat is a rare talent and they wish they could have more people like her!”

Cat has great advice for other job seekers working with a staffing agency or struggling to find work:

“Find a staffing agency that works for you. Treat it like your job. Make sure you’re reaching out to your recruiter, be open to different jobs and you WILL find something!”

Congratulations, Cat! We’re so glad your persistence paid off and we were able to help you find a job that works for you.
