I Came to the U.S. Looking to Learn – I’ve Been Promoted 3 Times in My New Job

Mo Sylla was a teenager when his family decided to leave West Africa and move to the United States, looking for new opportunities. His personal goal was to learn and grow – and to experience as much as possible.

He hit the ground running, quickly completing his high school education.

After graduating, Mo signed up for a two-year vocational labor program and worked two jobs in order to support himself. He did computer repairs and hospitality work.

He then worked with a large online retailer for two years, supporting their warehouse. Mo thrived in this production environment, but was hungry to learn new skills.

Ideally, he was looking for an opportunity that offered the busy pace of a warehouse environment but that allowed him to help others.

Mo found himself back in school once more. But this time he was going to school to become a Certified Nursing Assistant.

After seven years caring for the elderly and in rehabilitation clinics, Mo decided that it was time to grow in a new field.

He began looking into new job opportunities, and an online search led him to TERRA’s Seattle office.

He went to his interview with an open mind. His goal, as always, was to experience and learn as much as possible.

The Seattle team was able to place Mo on a few assignments. Unfortunately, none were a good long-term fit for him. But one of the benefits of working with TERRA is that candidates are able to work with any of our branches after their initial interview.

Hoping to increase his chances of finding the right fit, Mo decided to reach out to TERRA’s Tukwila team.

He connected with Ashley Lyons, Tukwila Recruiter, who was instantly impressed by Mo’s desire to learn and his strong work ethic.

She thought he would be a great fit for one of her clients, who was looking for a warehouse order picker.

“Mo was very polite, communicated well and had a great track record of success. He wanted a job where he could work hard, be a part of a team and gain a career,” said Ashley.

She set up an interview with her client immediately.

After the interview, Mo knew he wanted the job – and he got it!

The best part is that after just one week, the client knew they wanted to convert him to a regular employee.

His supervisor said, “He is great! We love his communication, professionalism and his eagerness to learn.”

The story gets even better.

Mo was not only hired on as a full-time, regular employee, he’s also be been promoted – THREE times! He worked his way from order picker, to forklift operator, to working in the shipping and receiving department.

Mo’s advice for job seekers is pretty simple.

“Be there on time as expected, and complete the job duties that are assigned to you – that’s what got me to where I am.”

He also wanted to thank Ashley for her help in finding him the right fit. “Ashley’s done so much for me and my son and I am extremely grateful,” Mo said humbly.

Mo came to the United States looking to learn and grow, and to experience as much as possible. We’d say he is definitely crushing his goals. He is not afraid to try new things, he is hungry to learn, and does his best to exceed in everything he sets out to do.

We are so proud of Mo’s success and are thankful he let us play a part in his story. He truly is an inspiration.
